Two Babes in the Woods

Cat. #1374 (MFH #61) - As sung by Reba Dearmore, Gaithersberg, Maryland on December 31, 1971

VERSE 1
My friend, have you heard how a long time ago
Two little children whose names I don't know
Were stolen away on a bright summers day
An' left in th woods I've heard people say

VERSE 2
An' when it was night so sad was their plight
Th sun went down and th moon gave no light
They sobbed an' they sighed an' they bitterly cried
An' th poor little babes, they laid down an' died

VERSE 3
An' when they were dead, th robins, so red
Brought strawberry leaves and over them spread
And all th night long, th branches along
They mourned they whistled and this was their song
Poor babes in th woods
