Wreck Of Number Nine

Cat. #0553 (MFH #704) - As sung by Mrs. Norma Kisner, Springdale, Arkansas on November 25, 1960

VERSE 1
On a dark stormy night
Not a star was in sight
An' th north wind came howling down th line
To a sweetheart, so dear
Of a brave engineer
Who had orders to pull ole number nine

VERSE 2
He kissed 'er goodbye
With a tear in his eye
But th joy in his heart he could not hide
For he thought on th morn
When th bright stars were gone
That this girl would become his blushing bride

VERSE 3
As he rambled along
His wheels sang a song
An' th black smoke came rolling from th stack
____ _ ___ __ _ __
_ __ _ _ ___ _ ___
On th morrow that he'd be coming back

VERSE 4
As he sped 'round th curve
His brave heart stood still
For a headlight shone full in his face
He whispered a prayer
As he threw on th air
For he knew this would be his final ride

VERSE 5
In th wreck, he was found
Lying there on the ground
An' he asked them to raise his weary head
As his breath slowly went
This message, he sent
To th girl that was to become his bride

VERSE 6
There's a little white home
I bought for our own
Where I thought we'd be happy, bye an' bye
I leave it to you
For I know you'll be true
Till we meet on that golden shore, goodbye
