Cat. #1156 (MFH #807) - As sung by Audrey Barclay, Springfield, Missouri on September 19, 1970
VERSE 1
I had a lovely lady friend
Who lived next door to me
An old maid sort a person
Who was nice as she could be
Now she was friendly every day
She'd lean acorss't th fence
And talk about th neighbors
Just as if she had some sense
VERSE 2
She'd borrow dishes, an' she'd say
She had a friend to tea
I used to think it funny
She'd not invited me
I learned th fact, a week ago
It really made me made me mad
My husband was the only company
She ever had
VERSE 3
Now I didn't mind th dishes
An' I didn't mind th tea
I would've loaned her anything
That belonged to me
For I think she went a bit to far
An' our friendship ties are slack
Since she borrowed my only husband
An' forgot to bring him back
VERSE 4
My lady friend came to our house
A week ago tonight
She seemed for hesitated
An' she said, she'd had a fright
She said, she'd heard a burglar
Prowlin' 'round her corner door
An' asked me if I'd let my husband
Help her search th floor
VERSE 5
I waited for an hour that night
That they had ran away
An' then I heard some trickular friend
Had turned that very day
She'd stoled a sugar bowl
Where I stored my monthly rent
An' borrowed ever stitch of clothes
I had before she went
VERSE 6
Though I didn't mind th dresses
An' I didn't mind th rent
I would've loaned her anything
Even my last cent
For a think she went a bit to far
An' our friendship ties are slack
Since she borrowed my only husband
And forgot to bring him back
