The Wild Moor

Cat. #0070 (MFH #676) - As sung by Mrs. Gladys Everly, Springfield, Missouri on April 20, 1958

VERSE 1
T'was on one cold winters night
When th wind blew across th wild moor
That Mary came wandering with her child
Till she came to her own Fathers door

VERSE 2
O Father, o Father, she cried,
Come down and open th door
Or th cild in my arms, will perish an' die
By th winds that blow across th wild moor

VERSE 3
But her Father was deaf to her cries
Not a sound of her voice reached his ears
The watch-dog did howl, and th village bell tolled
And th winds blew across th wild moor

VERSE 4
O, why did I leave this dear spot
Where once I was happy and free
But now, doomed to roam, without friends or home
And no one to take pity on me

VERSE 5
How must th old man have felt
When he came to th door th next morn
Poor Mary was dead, but th child was alive
Closely pressed in its dead Mothers arms

VERSE 6
The old man in his grief pined away
And th child to its Mother went soon
An' none, they say, have lived there to this day
An' th cottage to ruins has gone

VERSE 7
Th village points out the spot
Where th weeping willow hangs over th door
Where once Mary lived and where she died
By th winds that blew across th wild moor
