Cat. #1025 (MFH #661) - As sung by Ollie Gilbert, Mountain View, Arkansas on October 28, 1969
VERSE 1
They rode o'er th hills an' mountains
An' many a place it were unkown
They rode till they came to th lonesome valley
There they killed him, left him alone
VERSE 2
When her Brothers were returning
Their Sister asked, where 'er lover were
We lost him in a game of huntin'
We never could find him anywhere
VERSE 3
That night as he lay dreaming
Of her true loves stood by her side
Saying, your Brothers killed me in that lonesome valley
And left me there alone to die
VERSE 4
So she rose up, early next morning
Dressed herself so fine, could be
Say, I'll go an' hunt for my true lover
For his is all this world to me
VERSE 5
She rode o'er hills an' mountains
An' a many a place it were unknown
She rode till she came to th lonesome valley
There she found him dead alone
VERSE 6
His rosy cheeks they had faded
His lips were white as any snow
She kissed them o'er, o'er 'er crying
Say, you were darling friend I know
VERSE 7
Late that even'n as she were returning
Her Brothers asked, where have you been
O, hold your tongue you deceitful Brothers
Together both of you will hang
VERSE 8
They rose up early next mornin'
A trip across th deep blue sea
Here it rained an' hailed an' th strom overtook them
Now they have a watery grave in th sea
