Cat. #1581 (MFH #238) - As sung by Charles Strayer Jr., Sarcoxie, Missouri on September 17, 1976
VERSE 1
As I walked over London Bridge
One misty mornin' early
I heard some fair young maiden say
O, spare me th life of Georgie
VERSE 2
Go, saddle me up my mild white steed
An' bridle him so gayly
That I'll ride away to th Kings High Court
And I'll plead for th life of Gerogie
VERSE 3
She rode all day an' she rode all night
Till she was wet an' weary
Then combin' back her long yella hair
She pled for th life of Georgie
VERSE 4
She pulled out'a purse all filled with gold
Just like it never seen any
An' she said, young lawyers fee yourself
But plead for th life of Georgie
VERSE 5
Well, Georgie rode up an' he pled for himself
Said, I never murdered any
But I stole sixteen of th King's best steeds
An' I sold them in Romany
VERSE 6
Then the oldest lawyer at th bar
Said, George, I'm sorry for you
But your own confession, can will you to die
And th Lord, have mercy upon you
VERSE 7
As Georgie was walking thru th streets
He bid farewell to many
Then he bid farewell to his own true love
Which grieved him worse than any
VERSE 8
Now, Georgie was hanged with a golden cord
Just like you've never seen any
For he was a member of a royal race
An' loved by a virtious lady
