The Lass Of Mohee

Cat. #0441 (MFH #366) - As sung by Mrs. George Ripley, Milford, Missouri on December 14, 1959

VERSE 1
As I went a walking for a pleasure one day
In sweet recreation to while time away
I sat there amusing myself on th grass
But who shuold I spie, but a fair Indian lass

VERSE 2
She sat down beside me an' taking my hand
You are a stranger an' in a strange land
An' if you will follow your welcome to come
An' dwell in th cottage that I call my home

VERSE 3
Together we wandered, together did rove
Till we came to cot in th cocanut grove
When this kind expression, she made unto me
If you will consent sir, to stay here with me

VERSE 4
An' go no more roving upon th deep sea
I'll teach you th language of th lass of Mohee

VERSE 5
O no, my fair maiden, that never could be
For I have a true love in my own countaree
An' I'll not forsake her for I know she loves me

VERSE 6
Th last time I saw her, she stood on th strand
An' as my boat passed her she waved me her hand
Saying, when you have landed with th girl that you love
Think th lass of Mohee, in th cocanut grove

VERSE 7
An' when I'd landed, on my own native shore
With friends an' relations around me once more
I gazed all about me, not one could I see
That was fit to compare with th maid of Mohee

VERSE 8
An' th girl that I trusted proved untrue to me
So, I'll turn my course backward from this land I'll flee
An' I'll spend th rest of my days, with th lass of Mohee
