Cat. #0846 (MFH #608) - As sung by Ollie Gilbert, Mountain View, Arkansas on August 27, 1969

VERSE 1
Th postman delivered a letter
That filled Mother's heart full of joy
But she didn't know, till she read inside
It's th last one from 'er darl'in boy

VERSE 2
Dear Mom, it's th way that it started
I miss you so much, it went on
I didn't know that I loved you so
But I'll prove it when this war is won

VERSE 3
I'm write'n this letter, in a trench bomb
So scold me if it isn't neat
You know, as I did, when I was a kid
Come home with mud on my feet

VERSE 4
Dear Mom, th Captain has give us our order
We'll have to carry them thru
But I'll finish this letter, th first chance I get
But now I'll say, I love you

VERSE 5
Mother's ole hands tremble
As she fought back th tears in her eyes
But they came unashamed fer there was no name
She knew that her boy had died

VERSE 6
That night she knelt by her bedside
She prayed, dear Lord hear my plea
Protect all th boys that's fight'in tonight
O God, keep America free
