Cat. #0093 (MFH #573) - As sung by Mr. Ed Stilley, Eureka Springs, Arkansas on May 1, 1958
VERSE 1
When first I heard of a people
Who claim, the old time religion was real
I said, I'll go down, take a look at th crowd
There just a weak minded, I feel
VERSE 2
Well, I went down, peeped in at th door
Th devil says, don't you go in
I said I'll go in now, for that it won't hurt
But, I'll set as far back as I can
VERSE 3
Just about then, he got up to preach
He looked right straight back at me
He told everybody how evil I was
He did'nt talk like he thought much of me
VERSE 4
They sang like they meant it, they all clapped their hands
I said, that's emotion, that's all
When they get down to pray, I'll jest get up an' leave
I don't want to be seen her at all
VERSE 5
When I went I said, I could'nt stay long
I must be back around nine
The fall fell from heaven, I fell to th floor
I got home about two, feelin' fine
VERSE 6
And so, now there's no reason to doubt
The old time religion is real
I got an expierence I'll never forget
God certainly got hold of me
VERSE 7
Something got hold of me that night
Something got hold me
I went there to fight, but o, that night
God certainly got hold of me
