The Shelf Behind the Door

Cat. #0099 (MFH #574) - As sung by Mr. W. H. Shelly, Cabool, Missouri on May 14, 1958

VERSE 1
When first I came to Jesus
With my load of guilt and sin
I asked him to fergive me
And he freely took me in
He cleansed my soul from idols
And filled my heart with joy
And give me peace and happiness
Old Satan cain't destroy

CHORUS:
The shelf behind th door
The shelf behind th door
Tear it down, throw it out
Don't use it any more
For Jesus wants his temple clean
From ceiling to th floor
He even wants the corners clean
Just in behind th door

VERSE 2
There's many people of today
Profess to love th Lord
They say, their doing all his will
And trusting in th word
But yet their always grumbling
Do you know th reason why?
T'is, because they have some idols
That their keeping on the sly

VERSE 3
Some love the filthy weed, you know
An' some th social glass
Some say, they'd rather dance than eat
Some idolize their dress
And 'er they get their hearts put right
They give th consant o'er
And put them on that little shelf
That's in behind th door

VERSE 4
O, how the gospel chariot would
Go sweeping thru th land
O, how th Christian soldiers
They would fight at Gods command
O, how th work of Jesus
Would spread from shore to shore
If it were not for that little shelf
That's in behind th door

Mr. Shelly had a very bad stroke about 18 months ago and the left side of his body was slowly becoming of some use.
