Blind Child's Prayer

Cat. #1422 (MFH #45) - As sung by Joe Wages, Branch, Arkansas on January 19, 1967

VERSE 1
O Father, they tell me that tonight
You will wed another bride
That you'll hold her in your arms
Where my dear Mother died

VERSE 2
They say her name is Mary too
Th name my Mother wore
O, tell me is she kind and true
Like the one you loved before

VERSE 3
An' is her step so soft an' blight
Her voice so meek an' mild
Father, do you think she'll love
Your blind an' orphant child

VERSE 4
O Father, do not bid me come
To greet your loving bride
I cannot meet her in th room
Where my dear Mother died

VERSE 5
Her picture hanging on th wall
Her Bible lying near
There's th harp her fingers touched
An' there's her vacant chair

VERSE 6
Th chair whereby her side I knelt
T' say my evenin' prayer
O Father, do not bid me come
I could not meet her, there

VERSE 7
And as I cry myself t' sleep
As I might often do
And there's th key her fingers reached
My new made Mom, an' you

VERSE 8
Now let me kneel down by her side
An' to our Saviour pray
That God might hear and protect you both
Along lifes weary way

VERSE 9
Her prayers were like a graceful song
An' lingering there she said,
O Father, take me in your arms
An' lay me on th bed

VERSE 10
And as he turned to leave her room
A dreadful cry was given
He turned to glance her last, last smile
His blind child was in Heaven

VERSE 11
They laid her by her Mother's side
An' laid a monument there
And on it were these peaceful words
There'll be no blind, there
