The Black Sheep

Cat. #0353 (MFH #52) - As sung by Mrs. Pearl Brewer, Pocahantas, Arkansas on May 27, 1959

VERSE 1
In a quiet and country village
Not so far away
Lived a rich an' aged man
Who's hair had turned to gray
He had three sons, his only ones
Both Jack and Tom were sly
While Ted was honest as could be
And never told a lie

VERSE 2
Th brothers, they resented Ted
They were always at th door
Th things that they would tell on him
Would make the old man sore

VERSE 3
At last he said to Ted, one day
Begone forever more
And this was th words th black sheep said
As he stood there in th door

VERSE 4
Don't be angry with me, Dad
Don't drive me from your door
I know that I've been wreary
I've repented o'er and o'er
Give to me another chance
Saying, put me to th test
You'll find that a black sheep loves his Dad
Far better than th rest

VERSE 5
Years and years passed slowly by
The ole man now grows ole
He called to him both Jack and Tom
And gave to them his gold

VERSE 6
Until that day, they would never stray
They were always at his side
That night when Jack returned home
He brought with him a bride

VERSE 7
Th bride begin to hate the ole man
More and more each day
Until one day, they heard her say,
The ole fools in my way

VERSE 8
Th brothers, they decided to send
Him to a poor farm near
Th words that th black sheep said
Came ringing in his ear

VERSE 9
Don't be angry with me Dad
Don't drive me from your door
I know that I've been wreary
I've repented o'er and o'er
Give to me another chance
Saying, put me to th test
You'll find that a black sheep loves his Dad
Far better than th rest

VERSE 10
Th wagon drove in front of th door
It was th poor house bound
It was disgusting to th people all
Who were gathered around
A fair young lad, so finely dressed
Come pushing through th crowd,
Stand back, stand back, you dirty brutes
This shall not be allowed

VERSE 11
The ole man clasp-ped in his arms
Said, you have stood th test
I found that a black sheep loves his Dad
Far better than th rest
